Skin Deep is a photographic project by Steven Burton, a Brooklyn-based British portraitist with a passion for travel and faraway cultures.
With the collaboration of Father Greg Boyle, promoter of projects aimed at the rehabilitation of Los Angeles gang members, Burton published in 2017 this volume that immediately went viral, provoking a reflection on the perception of tattoos in society, while drawing attention to the difficult path of recovery of Latin American gang affiliates.
The same tattoos that protected from the rival gangs become a huge obstacle for those who decide to change their lives.
Using Photoshop, the faces of Steven's subjects were cleaned of their affiliation symbols, and the result was then presented to each of the protagonists, documenting their reactions.
Skin Deep: Looking Beyond the Tattoos is an emotional and thought-provoking project, eliciting empathy for those who have fallen into the Gang Life trap and are desperately seeking a better future.
