The brand started as a dedicated workshop in the French Alps, moved by the potential of the region's booming ski industry. It began by creating ski edges and saw blades, focusing on innovation and precision craftsmanship. Leveraging its metalworking expertise, Salomon gradually widened its product range, becoming the leader in winter sports gear by 1970. In 1957, Georges Salomon revolutionized skiing by introducing one of the first modern ski bindings with a self-release heelpiece. The following years were marked by continuous growth and expansion in the global market, introducing products that catered to skiing and a broader range of outdoor activities like trail running, hiking, and mountaineering. Over the years, the label has opened to produce techwear and outdoor apparel, transferring the same dedication to technical advancements to wearables while pursuing innovative solutions for sustainable production. The turning point arrived only later, in the early 90s, when the label from the French Alps opened to a new product: outdoor sneakers. In 1992, the Salomon S/LAB was released, its first trail running shoe, incorporating the same commitment to quality and functionality but blended with a cutting-edge design that transcends the performance footwear market, overflowing into lifestyle and foreseeing the gorpcore trend. The XT series, alongside the Speedcross line, blurred the lines, making the brand overflow from the outdoors to the urban settings, up to the fashion world peaks. In 2013, the Salomon XT-4 was released: a trail-running sneaker renowned for durability and versatility on challenging terrains, conjugating a robust construction with the groundbreaking Agile Chassis™ System for stability, paired with the first-time introduced self-patented Contragrip outsole. Putting a higher emphasis on structural support, the same lugged outsole is also featured in the improved Salomon XT-6 released in 2016, targeted for rougher and more uneven terrains. To completely satisfy the trail and ultra-trail runners’ needs, the XT-6 comes also equipped with Gore-Tex®, finishing the well-acclaimed waterproof sneaker to be competitive all over the outdoor sports realm. The French label apparel spans from outdoor accessories, like pouches and backpacks, to running vests and windbreakers, making the collection suitable for any active sports, from skiing to cycling.
