Pendleton’s history begins in 1863 when Thomas Lister Kay, an English immigrant weaver by trade, moves to Oregon and opens his own woolen mills. His daughter marries a member of the Bishop family, reportedly known as C.P., a retail merchant who proved a great benefit to Kay’s company, able to combine manufacturing and retail sales. In the early 1900s, Bishop’s sons reopens a defunct woolen mill in the city of Pendleton, where Pendleton's history as an independent company start. Inheriting traditional Native American textures, the textile company resumes the production of jacquard blankets commonly used by the Native American community in the area as ornaments and ceremonial dresses. From the local indigenous tribes of the Columbia River area, Pendleton later expands to the Navajo, Hopi, and Zuni peoples of the American Southwest, widening its collection of patterns and motifs. In the following years, one of the Bishop’s sons begins the production of wool shirts, taking distance from the commonly used work jackets in dull colors, recurring to the vibrant textures used by Native American communities. The popularity of these shirts increases during WWII when the Oregon-born company dedicates its production to wool accessories for the US Army. In the post-war years, Pendleton’s catalog opens to the female audience. In the same years, the newly launched 49er jacket becomes instantly a best-seller, establishing the brand as a lifestyle clothing line. Its signature geometric-themed printed shirts becomes a sportswear staple, to the point of giving name to a little singing group known as the Pendletones, which later becomes The Beach Boys. From the 70s Pendleton begins using other materials alongside wool, making it possible for the brand to produce collections for all the seasons. Nowadays Pendleton’s distinctive patterns are highly demanded in the sneaker world, from Taka Hayashi’s Vans Vault collaboration to Nike using their wool for multiple shapes of Air Max and Air Force. The wool blankets are commonly used as liners for many field jackets and overshirts by other brands, above all Ralph Lauren.
