Nike’s history is full of breakthrough technologies and shoes: Air Force 1 with Air Unit, Nike Dunk and too many styles to count. What makes the Beaverton-based company so special is its natural ability to be influential both technologically and culturally. A practical example: besides changing forever the way we run, the Air Max and their visible air chamber in the midsole turned the sneakers into a mass phenomenon. The launch of many Nike sneakers such the Air Max 1 and Air Max 97, as well as the Air Force 1, helped Nike to understand footwear styles are conceived by consumers as some sort of cultural and social idols rather than as simple items. Thanks to this awareness, and also thanks to Nike’s natural ability to intercept trends and figures aligned with the brand’s highly distinctive philosophy, Nike made sportswear one of the most predominant and popular cultural languages worldwide. That’s why the Nike Blazer, Cortez, Huarache and all the other Swoosh-branded retro sneakers look more like characters of a movie saga than shoes, each featuring its own story, personality and circle of enthusiasts. What’s more, Nike’s signature talent to leave its mark on every discipline created legendary connections with many athletes, with the Michael Jordan link standing as the most significant example. And yet Nike keeps evolving and adding new layers to its sportswear and athleisure DNA, now absorbing influences from outside the sports world. Virgil Abloh, Travis Scott and Drake belong to a small niche of creatives, artists and designers that Nike targeted to further develop its sport-based heritage, thus resulting in a more design-oriented approach and in an environmentally friendly way of producing, evidenced by the Nike Move to Zero sportswear and sneakers line.
