Thinking of Lacoste, one cannot not associate it with the iconic crocodile logo and the legendary short-sleeved polo shirt. In 1933 the tennis player René Lacoste decided to revolutionize the sportswear used on tennis courts, replacing the traditional long-sleeved shirt worn under a blazer with the cotton jersey polo shirt that we all know. Monsieur Lacoste's name was then not only associated with the world of tennis, but also with the sports shirts he designed. From the collaboration between the tennis player and an industrialist from Troyes, André Giller, came the very first mass production of the famous 'L.12.12.' polo shirt, initially proposed in white, with a slightly shorter cut than those in production today. The name of the garment has a reason, as the letter L stands for Lacoste, 1 for its cotton pique fabric, 2 for the two short-sleeved model and 12 for the versions finalised by Lacoste. The brand's emblem, a crocodile with an open mouth, was then added to the left side of the polo shirt, as well as a reference to the nickname given to Renè Lacoste for his victories, "The Crocodile". After more than 80 years, the Lacoste polo shirt is still an undisputed symbol of sporty elegance, known today in its classic version with at least 40 different colours.
