Snow Peak

Amid the climbing boom in Japan post-war, a young climber in the Tsubame-Sanjo area, renowned for its over-centuries metalworks tradition, stands out for his determination but especially for his keen eye for outdoor gears and climbing tools. When the metalworkers in the area couldn’t satisfy his always-increasing requests, he became independent at only 26, founding Yamai Shoten, later renamed Yamako, the predecessor to today’s Snow Peak. In 1956, a group of Japanese climbers became the first to reach the Himalayas’ Mt. Manaslu peak, the eighth-highest mountain in the world, causing an unprecedented climbing boom in Japan. Among fellow climbers was Yukio Yamai, a young man from the Tsubame-Sanjo area, whose favorite peak was Mt. Tanigawa, a fearsome mountain known as “The Devil’s Mountain” cause of its steep rock faces and drastic weather changes that have claimed more victims than any other mountain in the world. Climbing every week, the young Yukio Yamai returned to his local metalworkers asking for constant updates on his outdoor accessories tailored to his needs and envisioning what he would need to step up his climbing experience. Hobnails for hiking boots, hammers, crampons, and other climbing accessories were required, while Yukio Yamai tirelessly finished his craftsmanship. In 1958, at 26, he became independent, founding Yamai Shoten, renamed after Yamako, the beginning of what is today known as Snow Peak. The original high-quality climbing equipment, personally tested by Yukio, began to sell incredibly fast all over Japan. The first items that stood out were the crampons that became so popular he couldn’t manage to produce them by hand anymore, building a mass production system using forging machines in the Tsubame-Sanjo area. In 1963, five years after founding Yamai Shoten, the company was renamed Snow Peak, tributing Mt. Tanigawa so inspiring for Yukio growing up as a climber. His hometown in the Japanese Niigata Prefecture was known for its high-quality stainless steel products. Yukio, blending his strong experience in mountain sports with his commitment to superior outdoor equipment, hit the market with a ground-breaking product: the first-ever mountaineering stove. Snow Peak’s meticulous attention to quality, innovation, design, and aesthetics led to the production of a multifarious series of accessories for the grand outdoors, crafting tools suitable for hiking and climbing at the crossroads between functionality and minimal design. One of the Japanese label’s best-selling products is the innovative Titanium Single Wall 450 mug, which exemplifies the company's commitment to lightweight, durable, and elegantly designed outdoor gear. From cutlery and kitchenware to waterproof wearables, up to mountain-aimed backpacks, the same keen eye has been applied to the Snow Peak clothing line. Pursuing a unique blend of functionality and durability, the Japanese label debuted with a collection of essentials that combined techwear features with an everyday style sense, crafting officewear suitable for daily routines as much as trail runs and hiking. Integrating traditional Japanese techniques with cutting-edge production systems, Snow Peak delivers waterproof jackets, packable and in anti-tear fabrics, and a series of quick-dry t-shirts and water-resistant active pants.
