Before the launch of the denim company, Hideiko Yamane used to work at Lapine, one of the most-respected stores in Osaka and famous for being one of Levi's deadstock's biggest importers, where he inherited the Americana workwear tradition blending it with the sought-after Japanese craftsmanship. Even the name subtly remarks the acknowledgment of the American jeans heritage, keeping ‘Evis’ in the name but reworking it to be a tribute to Ebisu, the God of fortune and fishermen - also depicted on the label. Collecting the legacy of Kojima Jeans Street, in between the 80s and early 90s, the Osaka 5 were formed: five Osaka-born denim brands imposing Japanese quality standards to the worldwide market, redefined the status of Japanese denim globally. Evisu Genes was the only one that managed to actually sell to the American market, challenging American staples like Calvin Klein Jeans and Tommy Hilfiger. The logo on the back pockets quickly became a streetwear symbol, arising among hip-hop enthusiasts at the point that Evisu bottoms were tributed by rappers such as Jay Z and Lil’ Wayne. Evisu jeans are recognizable by their Japan-sourced fabric, a selvedge and raw denim dyed with indigo to give that distinctive blue color, typically kept unwashed to let the tint fade naturally away wearing them. The rigid twill gives a baggy fit to the jeans and a boxy fit to the denim jackets. The recognizable Evisu logo has been made even more present especially since the introduction of the ‘daicock logo’, an amplified version of the classic seagull logo which covers the back of nearly the whole legs. In recent years the brand has experienced a popularity comeback in the streetwear scene - also due to the use of vintage jeans in the styling of hip-hop big names - which led to collaboration with Palace, in a fortunate series of collaborations with brands like Arc’teryx and Salomon, and Travis Scott.
